Garrett Metcalfe — District 13 Durham
The winner of this year’s award has shown exemplary dedication in the struggle for equity and the promotion of human rights locally, provincially and/or internationally over a number of years.
Garrett teaches at Durham Alternative Secondary School in Whitby, Ontario where he is branch President. He is also Co-Chair of the district Human Rights Committee and a member of EPAC.
Garrett exemplifies human rights advocacy and struggle. His accomplishments have been a direct benefit to an incalculable number of people. He is a founder of the Durham Region chapter of PFLAG and has served on the board of the AIDS committee of Durham Region. In D13 Garrett started the first GSA (then GSTA) and also created the first queer studies course. He has a history of offering his insight into the broader community and regularly offers in-service to Durham Regional Police.
