Education Week 2018

May 6, 2018 — Every year beginning the first Monday in May, Ontario celebrates Education Week. This year, Education Week is from May 7 to May 11.

With a provincial election looming, the theme for Education Week 2018, Public Education: It’s for Everyone, echoes the title of OSSTF/FEESO’s Education Platform, and emphasizes our conviction that Ontario’s public education system must always meet the needs of all those who rely on it.

We believe in a publicly-funded education system that lays the foundations for every student to succeed, and we know that a system dedicated to that goal must be guided every day by the following principles:

  • UNIVERSALITY—access for everyone
  • COMPREHENSIVENESS—opportunity for everyone
  • PROFICIENCY—achievement for everyone
  • ACCOUNTABILITY—value for everyone

We urge all OSSTF/FEESO members, and all others who are celebrating Education Week, to consider these goals and principles when deciding how to vote in the upcoming election in June.

The celebration of Education Week was initiated by OSSTF/FEESO in 1930 to recognize and celebrate the essential role public education plays in the lives of communities all over the province. Within a few years Education Week was being celebrated across Canada, and today, thanks to OSSTF/FEESO’s initiative 88 years ago, it is officially recognized in Ontario and observed by education stakeholders throughout the province.
