Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation hosts international conference on education research

TORONTO, ON – Mar 28 2018 — On April 13 and 14, the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF/FEESO) will host the international researchED movement at a conference for educators at Mississauga Secondary School.

ResearchED is a grassroots movement begun by UK-based teacher, author, and student behaviour expert Tom Bennett. Frustrated with unproven fads and unquestioned trends in education, Bennett has shaped a community of researchers and educators into an organization dedicated to applying evidence-based practices in the classroom.

The conference will be preceded by an evening address by Mr. Bennett at the Westin Toronto Airport Hotel at 6 p.m. Friday on “Evidence informed behaviour management.” The following day, the conference officially begins at Mississauga Secondary School with a keynote address by the world-renowned cognitive psychologist and author Daniel T. Willingham of the University of Virginia. The conference will then continue with 40 workshops throughout the day on various topics related to research in education by presenters from the across Canada, the UK, Europe, and the U.S.

To OSSTF/FEESO President Harvey Bischof, this is one of the many ways that the Federation protects and enhances public education. “Educators are committed to exercising their professional judgment in pursuit of providing the best possible education for students in their charge,” said Bischof.  “For too long, education in Ontario has been in thrall to gurus and ideologues who are disconnected from classroom realities. This conference will help give educators some tools to push back against the unfounded prescriptions and imposed edu-myths that have too often interfered with the sound practice of their craft,” Bischof concluded.

OSSTF/FEESO, founded in 1919, has 60,000 members across Ontario. They include public high school teachers, occasional teachers, educational assistants, continuing education teachers and instructors, early childhood educators, psychologists, secretaries, speech-language pathologists, social workers, plant support personnel, university support staff, and many others in education.
